Salmon

Description

Gufuá is a small and fragile river. In drought summers the upper part of the river can have low water, while the lower part is completely different. There, the river has deep pockets and dark pools. The fishing spots that are close to the estuary of Gufuá are tidal, but anglers don’t fish in saltwater but in the freshwater backed up by the tide from Hvítá into Gufuá. When there is high tide the pools can be lively and the biting of the salmon great. The best time to fish Gufuá is in July. The normal total catch in the river is around 150 – 220 salmon annually and the highest catch was 300 salmon. In the river there are around 50 marked fishing spots, but experience from later years shows that they are much more numerous. The lower part of the river is still unexplored with respect to angling. Until now, most of the fish have been caught on worms but fly fishing has increased in recent years.

Angling lodge

By the river there is a small fishing cabin with four bunks, cooking facilities, tableware, gas grill and a bathroom. The house is without electricity and anglers need to take with them coal, bedding and everything else they might need. Several signs have been set up, from the bridge over Gufuá and down the road, to guide people to the cabin. It’s worth mentioning that tides can occur on the beach and in the biggest tides anglers may have to wait for an hour or so for access. Anglers are of course at their own risk and are asked to show the utmost care.

Directions

Drive road 1 from Borgarnes until you come to Ferjubakka road nr. 530. Take that road, drive over Gufuá by Ölvaldsstaði and drive the concrete to the end. Turn right where the concrete road ends and soon turn left just before the farm Ferjubakki. That road is driven all the way to Hvítá and down onto the sand. The cabin is not the small house that faces on the left, but continue driving further on over the sand which is rock hard and safe to pass. The road divides into two lanes. Take the right one and the hunting lodge is the first house on the right and marked with a sign “Veiðihús Gufuá”.

Fishing areas/sections:

The top area: from the main road and just above Laxholt. This area can be absolutely great for fishing, if there is enough water. Fishing in low water is not productive.
Central area: from the bridge on the main road and down to fishing spot no. 11. It can be productive in good water, but is otherwise the slowest area.
