Gljúfurá í Húnavatnssýslu

The river flows through a rugged landscape from its source of the south side of Víðdals-mountain, about 28 km distance into the lake Hóp. However, it is only fishable about 10 km from the estuary. This is one of those salmon rivers that is known for its high average weight, about 8 pounds. Salmon ladders enable the salmon to migrate far into the moorlands. It’s not only salmon that are caught in Gljúfurá, – there is a considerable amount of char fishing and sea trout in the estuary by the Hóp. The Arctic char weighs from one to three lbs., but the sea trout can reach up to six lbs. River Gljúfurá is an extremely beautiful and interesting fishing river. The salmon migrate late into the river and therefore the best time is August and September.
