Salmon

Description

Laxá in Skefilsstaðahreppur is a good salmon river in northern Iceland. The river flows its 24 km long way from the mountains, down to Laxárdalur and then falls into the sea in Skagafjörður.

The river offers a great variety, from soft grassy slopes to steep and narrow cliffs. There are a total of 50 marked fishing spots in the river. Laxá salmon populations have been rebuilding in recent years after the river’s stock almost disappeared in the late 1990s. The river was protected for several years, at the beginning of the 21st century, but recently restricted fishing has been resumed. The fishing in recent years has been successful and the salmon stock is getting stronger. The fishing days have usually been sold out quickly, since the river has many admirers. Two rods are sold as a package and one rod is allowed on each beat.

Accommodation & Facilities

Angling lodge

There is no formal fishing cabin by the river, but an old but extensively renovated concrete house is included in the fishing licenses. The house is both spacious and comfortable. There is a sleeping space for up to eleven people. There is a gas grill by the house.

Fishing rules

The fishing licenses include a fishing report which must be returned at the end of the fishing day, even if no fish have been caught. The permits must be returned into a specially made box by the farm Skíðastaðir.

It is strictly forbidden to have more than one rod fishing the beat at any one time. If two or more people are sharing a rod, they must be together at a fishing spot.
