What can be fished

Description

Lake Arnarvatn stóra is one of the most popular fishing lakes in Iceland. It is at 540 m above sea level, about 4.0 km² in area, quite deep and has many bays. The main bay, Sesseljuvík, Húsfellingar had a fishing station. Austurá flows out from it. Hólmavík bay is the name of the southeastern part of the lake and Skammá flows out from it and into Réttarvatn. There are a lot of char and trout in the lake, but, as usual, anglers success is variable. Targeted net fishing has helped to keep the size of the fish in balance and is this especially true of the char. Fishing permits are valid throughout the area and in the upper part of Austurá. It is best to fish in the morning and evening and most of the fishing is often done soon after the ice melts.

Camping

Camping is allowed by the lake and there is a good campsite by Sesseljuvík

Directions

It is allowed to fish the entire lake and a good part of Austurá. The dates when the road to the lake is passable vary from year to year, but it is usually just before or in the middle of June. The road from Laugarbakki is accessible to most all-wheel drive cars and there is a difficult road from Kalmanstunga in Borgarfjörður, but work has been done to repair that road. It is not possible to drive along the lake.
