Description
Norðurá in Borgarfjörður is considered by many anglers to be the best salmon river in Iceland, with an average catch of about 2000 salmon for the last 10 years. The river runs from Holtavörðuvatni, about 62 km from the sea and its catchment area is about 518 km². Norðurá has about 170 named fishing pools and their diversity is great; from medium size pools/runs to big flats. The fishing area offers everything one can imagine in a salmon river. In Norðurá there are three beautiful waterfalls, Laxfoss, Glanni and Króksfoss.
For a long period of time the waterfalls were great barriers for the salmon, especially Laxfoss. But after salmon ladders were installed in Laxfoss and Glanna and a minor construction made by Króksfoss, the salmon can migrate easily up the river to the moorland.

Angling lodge
The fishing lodge is called Rjúpnahæð. Recently a new addition was constructed, which has 14 bedrooms, waders storage, reception hall and sauna. The reception hall is connected to the living room and from the living room is an entrance to the dining room. There is a hotel standard of service, with food, bedlinen, bathrobes and towels. In the living room there is a window with the most beautiful view by a salmon river in Iceland; Laxfoss, the Grábrók Lava, Hraunsnefsöxl and the “queen” of Borgarfjörður the mountain Baula. Anglers also love to sit by the fireplace in the living room, especially in the autumn. A masterchef takes care of an angler’s appetite with his great cooking.
Fishing rules
All salmon 70 cm and larger should be released. The quota is a subject to the decision of the Angling Club of Norðurá at any given time
Directions
The fishing area changes during the season. From June 6th until July 6th it extends from Kálfhylur up to the bridge by Fornihvammur. From July 6th (evening) until September 1st the fishing area is from Engjanefi by Munaðarnes and up to Hvammsleiti. From September 1st (evening) until September 8th it is Engjanefi up to Króksfoss.
