Haffjarðará is one of the best known salmon rivers in Iceland. It runs through the spectacular environment and surroundings in Rauðhálsa- and Elborgarhraun on its way to the sea. There are many good fishing spots in the river such as Kvörnin, Grettir, Sauðhylur, Urðin og Nesendi. Haffjarðará is somewhat special in that it is entirely sustainable and no juvenile salmon are stocked into it. The fishing has fluctuated somewhat over the years and has been from barely 500 salmon and up to just over 2000 salmon annually in recent years.
