What can be fished

Description

River Fnjóská is 117 km in length, has its source in Bleiksmýrardrög and is one of the biggest spring fed rivers in the country. Salmon, sea-run char, brown trout and landlocked char are caught in Fnjóská during the fishing season, but primarily salmon and sea char. Migration is at its peak in mid and late July. Fishing spots in Fnjóská are mostly expansive runs with even flows, which makes the river great for fly fishing. This is an exciting opportunity to catch big salmon as the average weight of salmon is high. The river is fished with eight rods on four beats and in Fnjóská it is best to use double handed rods.

Accommodation & Facilities

Angling lodge

Flúðasel is in the area of Böðvarsnes, shortly below the zoning of beats 2 and 3. There are five houses and the arrangement is that three houses accommodate two rods each and there is a room for four in each house. In the fourth house there is storage for waders, and accommodation for one rod in a double room. In Flúðasel is a sleeping space for two and a sleeping loft. Guests need to bring their own sheets and towels, clean the house on departure and take all their rubbish to containers, which are by the highway at two places along the river.

The fishing lodge is only for anglers that are on beats 1 – 4 and it is only allowed to use two bedrooms for each rod.

Fishing rules

Anglers are requested to close all gates behind them and not to drive on fields and untrodden trails without the permission of the landowners. They are also asked to show landowners and other anglers consideration, show the environment respect and not to leave rubbish by the river. All catches must be registered in a logbook on fnjoska.is. This website also has catch records from recent years.

The maximum catch per rod is one male fish, less than 70 cm, per half-day. After that one can fly fish and practice catch and release.

Directions

Drive road one east from Akureyri (via the tunnel) until you come to the bridge over Fnjóská, just below Vaglaskógur. Cross the bridge and shortly afterwards turn left onto road 835, through Fnjóská-valley. The fishing lodges are on the right-hand side 9 km from this junction.

In Fnjóská there are 4 fishing beats, with the total of 68 marked fishing spots (see here)
