Salmon

Description

Laxá in Aðaldalur has for long been called the queen of all salmon rivers in Iceland. It flows from Lake Mývatn for about 56 km in a beautiful landscape to Skjálfandaflói. The upper part of the river, that flows through Mývatnssveit and Laxárdalur, is well known for brown trout fishing. There is also good fishing for trout below the power station. Below the trout section there is a 20 km salmon section that now finally, after great anticipation by anglers, has been combined to the upper part under the same management company. It is probably true that nowhere in Iceland are there as many big salmon caught as in Laxá in Aðaldalur; every summer quite a few fish over 20 lbs are landed and salmon over 30 lbs are seen every summer. The area has great potential, diverse fishing spots and first-class accommodation.

Accommodation & Facilities

Angling lodge

There are two fishing lodges on the River Laxá. There is the Fishing Lodge at Árnes and the Fishing Lodge at Vökuholt. The lodge at Árnes offers a comfortable lounge and big dining room. It has eight double rooms with private bathrooms and two single rooms that share a bathroom. On the terrace is a jacuzzi, which is truly good to use after chasing silvery ones. Excellent chefs prepare delicious three course meals for the guests. At Vökuholt there are facilities for 24 people in 12 double rooms, each with a private bathroom. The lodge has a well-equipped dining room, and anglers may relax in comfort in the spacious guest lounge. There is a majestic view from the house in all directions. As with Árnes, there are noble chefs that “tickle the taste buds” of the anglers.

Fishing rules

All salmon must be released, but anglers may take brown trout. Boats are available at several fishing grounds and their use is the responsibility of the users. People are kindly asked to use the life-vests that are in the fishing lodge.
