Arctic Char

Description

The river is called Fjarðará for just the last stretch to the sea, after the rivers Gilsá and Þverá have merged by the farm Gil. It is fishable up to the waterfall, totaling 8 km. In Fjarðará, the catch is mainly good char, mostly 1 – 1.5 lb and up to barely 3 lb, but also some sea trout and salmon. There are many good fishing spots in the river, the estuary is however the highest catch area. The road in Hvalvatnsfjörður often does not open until the end of June, and even in early July or later if the winter has been harsh. It is convenient to use flies in the whole river and bead heads and dry flies are very effective. Streamer fishing is also very good in some parts of the river, and it is popular to use spinners in the estuary area.

Directions

Directions: It is not advisable to drive to Hvalvatnsfjörður except in a Jeep. To get to the place, drive towards Grenivík which is in the eastern part of Eyjafjörður. Shortly before reaching Grenivík, turn right, up by the Gljúfurá river, and from there drive over Leirdalsheiði and down to Hvalvatnsfjörður. From the highway to the estuary, it is a minimum 45 minutes’ drive. From the offroad by Gljúfurá and to the top fishing spot by the waterfall, close to Gil, is about 18 km.
