Description
River Stóra-Laxá flows about 90 km, from Lake Grænavatn down between Hrunamanna- and Gnúpverjahreppur, to River Hvítá by Iða. It is a rain fed river, with about 512 km² catchment area. Stóra-Laxá is fishable far into the Laxárgljúfur gorge, which means that the landscape along it is both varied and magnificent. The river is divided into 4 fishing beats/sections with a total of 10 rods. Single days are sold in the river, from noon to noon. The average catch is about 1000 salmon, but in the summer of 2013, there was a record catch when 1764 salmon were landed.
This is a section that has been considered by many to be one of the most beautiful salmon beats in the world. There are deep gorges with the bluish and seductive river that breaks through high walls. The salmon are not all huge, but every single salmon that is landed gives a special pleasure. The bonus is that there are many “big ones” hovering around.
Accommodation & Facilities
Fishing cabin
The fishing cabin is in the land of Laxárdalur. It has accommodation for 9 anglers in 5 bedrooms. There are duvets and pillows in the fishing lodge, but guests need to bring sheets. The house has a nice kitchen and the finest bathing facilities. There is a grill on the terrace by the house and a hot tub. There are also facilities for cleaning fish with a sink and a hose. Anglers are allowed to arrive at the house an hour before the fishing starts and must return the house clean an hour after their fishing is over.

Directions
Turn of road Suðurlandsvegur into road Skeiðavegur (towards Flúðir). From there, turn right onto Þjórsárdalsvegur after passing Sandlækur. Shortly after driving past the petrol station in Árnes, turn left onto Gnúpverjavegur. From there it is about 8 km to the fishing cabin in Laxárdalur. From Gnúpverjavegur, turn left onto Mástunguvegur. That road leads directly into the driveway of the fishing cabin.
The fishing area reaches from Bláhylur up to Ármótahylur by the river Skillandsá, with both fishing spots inclueded.
