Description
Lake Vesturhópsvatn is about 10.3 km² in size and at about 19 meters above sea level. It has been measured at 28 meters maximum depth. The environment of the lake is very beautiful and Borgarvirki, 177 m high, towers over the eastern part. There are quite good fish in the lake and the main catch is Arctic char, but brown trout can also be found. The char and trout caught are up to 3-4 pounds, but most are smaller. Sea trout and salmon are occasionally caught as there is a connection with sea via Faxalækur and river Víðidalsá. There are examples of very large fish from the lake, up to 6 to 7 kg sea trout in recent years. The largest recorded fish are a 12 kg sea trout in 1988 and a 12 kg brown trout in 1993.

Fishing cabin
There is a very nice house by the lake with two separated apartments under the same roof. In each apartment, which is about 50m2, there is sleeping space for at least eight people, six in bunk beds and two in a sofa bed. Even ten can sleep where two beds are one and a half width and are thus suitable for adults and children. The house has electricity, there is a stove with an oven and all major appliances. The bathrooms have a shower. There are good areas by the house for parking, including space for caravans with hook up sockets located behind the house. Guests are allowed to occupy the house at 3 pm on the day of arrival and the house must be vacated before 2 pm on the day of departure. The apartments must be returned well cleaned and all rubbish removed in containers that are close to the house. Guests provide their own duvets, sheets, towels, and tablecloths.
Season from 2/6 -11/8 one apartment (summer): 24-hour rentals from Monday – Friday, price ISK 18.700 / Weekend rental from Friday – Monday, kr. 56.100. (All included in the price, i.e., the apartment, fishing license for 4 rods and use of a boat).
The period from 11/8 – 2/6 one apartment (autumn, winter, spring): 24-hour rental from Sunday – Friday, price ISK 16.500 / Weekend rental from Friday – Sunday (two days) ISK 33.000. (All included in the price, i.e., the apartment, fishing license for 4 rods and use of a boat).
Fishing rules
There are four rods attached to each apartment, and there are no restrictions on rods for children under 12 years old. Fishing is allowed all year round if the weather allows it.
Directions
Access via Highway 1 which leads north through the tunnel under Hvalfjörður. Drive past the turn-off into Hvammstangi and about 6.5 km more, until it is possible to turn left into Vatnsnesvegur no. 711. Then, drive about 11 km to the lake. Turn right into one of the cottage settlements located on the west side of the lake. Follow the path for about 700 m until the driveway marked SVFK faces you.
The fishing area is the entire coastline within the fishing limits, which is bounded on the one hand by Klambranes and on the other hand by the creek Kýrlágur, which is just south of the southernmost cottage.
