The opening days in Laxá in Mývatnssveit ended this morning, and it can be said that fishing has started well in this renowned area. “The conditions are at their best,” confirmed Bjarni Júlíusson, one of the anglers who inaugurated the season. He and his fishing partner caught many nice fish, such as a 68 cm one, at the fishing spot Garðsenda in the Hofstaðaey beat.
At the beat Helluvað was a “party,” as Icelandic anglers used to say when the fishing is absolutely amazing. Two experienced fishing companions had caught 15 brown trout when a reporter asked them how things were going. They still had a plenty of time left in their shift. The fish were caught using nymphs and streamers at the fishing spots Lambeyjarstrengur and Stekkjagerðispollur e.g.
It’s great to hear that fishing is good and the fish are in good condition. Spring is still late, with snow drifting down to the river, vegetation in its “winter clothing”, only 10 cm down to frost in the ground, and almost no flies.
“But nothing compares to Laxá,” Bjarni says.
