The salmon fishing season of 2024 has had a more promising beginning compared to previous years. Salmon fishing has been below average for the past five years, but anglers are feeling optimistic about this year.
Sigurður Már Einarsson, a fisheries scientist at the Marine & Freshwater Research Institute, believed that this summer’s fishing season had a high likelihood of being similar to an average year.”I’m not sure if it can get any better than that. We do not have many big salmon, so it depends whether the one-year-old salmon yields in large quantities. Certainly, weather conditions play a significant role in fishing and people’s ability to succeed. However, I believe there will be a greater number of salmon in the rivers compared to previous years”
If this year’s fishing is average, it will be double compared to last year. The only years that surpassed the average were 2013 and 2015. The fishing statistics in Borgarfjörður are significantly higher compared to the same time last year. There is a notable increase in the presence of grilse compared to recent years. Both statistics and data from salmon counters confirm this. It is interesting to note that this improvement is only seen in Iceland, while little change seems to be happening in other European countries.
