The angling season in Iceland starts on April 1st. It mainly focuses on sea trout fishing, but in some areas that will open, trout and char can be found. In the south, there are rivers such as Tungufljót, Tungulækur, Eldvatn, Geirlandsá, Vatnamót, Leirá, and West-Rangá that will be open for fishing. In the north, there are rivers such as Litlaá in Kelduhverfi, Eyjafjarðará, Húseyjarkvísl, and Laxá in Aðaldal. A few lakes worth mentioning are Hraunsfjörður and Vífilsstaðavatn. Many anglers equipped with fly rods and a wide variety of streamers and nymphs will visit these areas.
One thing is certain: the weather will make fishing challenging for anglers and even miserable in some cases. The forecast for the first few days predicts significant frost, with only a few positive temperatures on the map. The most essential items to bring during these first days will likely be warm underwear, mittens, a hat, and a scarf.
If fly fishing conditions become hopeless, it is always possible to go ice fishing!
