Arnarvatnsá and Helluvaðsá are in fact the same river, called Arnarvatnsá at the top but further down it is called Helluvaðsá. The river is a tributary of Laxá in Mývatnssveit,. It runs out of Laxá just above the fishing area of Steinsrass and back into the Laxá opposite Brotaflói about 2km below. On this 2km section, the Arnarvatnsá / Helluvaðsá river flows in a great bend, thus creating a 5km long fishing area. The river is quite narrow and, in long sections, very calm. However, it contains a good number of fish and the largest can be up to 6-7 pounds. In the spring the fish gather in a few places at the top part of the river, but later in summer they spread all over the river.
