The source of river Austurá is in Lake Arnarvatn stóra and from the lake downstream to the heath-fence, which separates the pasture and homelands, is 22 km. However, the fishing area is only 2/3 of that distance or about 14 km. There are a lot of trout in the river below Arnarvatn stóra. There are also some char, mainly where the river is calm and has deep pools. The advantage of the river is that the fishing remains good after the fish in the lakes had eaten their fill and stopped feeding. However, the fish stocks are affected by the fishing pressure. The fact is that there is no control on numbers of anglers and no quota for fish killed.
