Borgarhafnarvötn are three lakes on Borgarhafnarheiði west of Smyrlabjargalón. They are Innstavatn, Miðvatn and Fremstavatn. When Smyrlabjarga Power station (1974) was taken into use, the lakes were largely combined and used as reservoirs. Borgarhafnarvötn are all at a similar height above sea level, or about 285 m. Miðvatn is 0.17 km² in area and Fremstavatn is 0.23 km² in area. No information was found about Innstavatn. The lakes hold mainly Arctic char, from Lake Þingvallavatn stock, and the common size is about 1.5 – 3 pounds. The biggest fish that have been caught in nets are 8-9 pounds, so there clearly are large fish in the lake. There are not many stories about angling in the lakes, but that should not stop people from trying.
