Lake Hestvatn is a large and deep lake north of Hestfjall in Grímsnes. It is 6.8 km² in area and its maximum depth is 60 m which means that the water bottom reaches up to 12 m below sea level. Its outlet is north of Hestfjall, to river Hvítá via Slauka. Hestvatn is a good fishing lake, it contains Arctic char and brown trout. Arctic char has been caught around three to four pounds, although most of the fish are smaller. The brown trout in the lake can also be quite big and fish up to eight pounds have been caught, although they are rare. The main fishing grounds are at Kríutangi, Heimavík, Austurvík and Vesturvík. It is possible to drive all the way to Heimavík, but 5-10 min walk from the road to Austur- and Vesturvík.
