What can be fished

Description

The rivers Jónskvísl and Sýrlækur in Landbrot are very beautiful and fun to fish. These are primarily sea trout areas, but the main fishing during the summer is for char and resident brown trout. Sea trout migrate to Jónskvísl through Grenlækur and they also enter Sýrlækur, which must not be underestimated – it is a small river but large fish are caught in it every year. The char in Jónskvísl are usually quite good size, from 3 – 6 pounds. They are mostly caught between June and August each year.

Accommodation & Facilities

Fishing cabin

The fishing club owns a house that is in the best location of the lava field just before reaching Flóðið. The house has electricity and there is a kitchen, lounge, bathroom, and shower in one wing and four double (bunk) bedrooms in the other. A gas grill is on site. Anglers may arrive at the cabin one hour before the start of the fishing and must vacate at 2 pm on the day of departure. Guests must clean the cabin before leaving and remove rubbish. Guests provide their own duvets, sheets, rags, and tea towels.

Fishing rules

It is permitted to take five sea trout. There is no quota for resident brown trout and char.

The fishing books for both Grenlækur and Jónskvísl are in a postbox by the farm Fossa, well-marked. Please record all catches and replace the book. The reason for this location is that not all the fishing clubs around Grenlækur and Jónskvísl use SVFK’s fishing cabin.

Directions

Directions: Turn right off highway no. 1 just before crossing the bridge of Skaftá and is about a 10-minute drive where you cross the rivers Grenlæk, Sýrlæk and Jónskvísl before turning left to the driveway to Fossar and Arnardrangi. There, drive towards Arnardrangi but take a road/trail through the gate to the right just before you reach the meadow gate by the farm. There is a path that runs in lava land along the meadow and down a slope. Then turn left and the house can be seen in the lava field.

The upper boundary of the fishing area is by Rafstöðvarlónið, but the lower 100 m below the lowest waterfall
