What can be fished

Brown Trout

Description

Those who visit the fishing area in Laxárdalur can expect to catch bigger brown trout than in most other places. Just over 70% of the catch in recent years has been fish larger than 50 cm and 20% of the catch is over 60 cm. Anglers are well away from the main road and enjoy privacy in the amazing surroundings of Laxárdalur. It is safe to say that the trout fishing area is unique: the environment, the river and the catch create a “dream world” that stays in the memory. Here, anglers do well whether they are using nymphs, streamers or dry flies. If the area is compared to the Laxa in Mývatnssveit, there are fewer but larger fish caught in Laxárdalur.

Accommodation & Facilities

Angling lodge

Anglers stay in the fishing lodge at Rauðhólar where they pay for full service. There are 12 double rooms and the lodge has a hot tub and sauna. There is no mobile telephone signal in the house but there is WiFi. There is a good storage room for waders, a big lounge, and a dining room where food is served at a buffet.

Directions

When entering Aðaldalur at the intersection by the farm Tjörn, turn into the valley towards Laugar. When reaching Staðarbraut (road 854), drive in the direction of Laxárvirkjun, but turn up Laxárdalur just before reaching the power station. From there drive up the valley until a bridge over the river is reached. On the east side of the river is the fishing lodge, Rauðhólar.

The fishing area covers the majority of Laxárdalur, or from Ljótsstaðabakki and almost down to Laxárvirkjun.
