What can be fished

Description

The ION fishing area at Lake Þingvallavatn is without a doubt one of the best BIG brown trout fishing areas in Iceland. Iceland Outfitters and ION fishing have reached an agreement on sales during the summer and autumn days, which will no doubt appeal to well-meaning anglers. Every year, trout are caught well over 20 pounds and few fishing areas in Iceland are as generous as the ION area. Many dream fish have been caught here in recent years and no doubt that many will catch the biggest fish of their lives in the area.

Fishing rules

It is not allowed to fish on the south side of Þorsteinsvík on Saturdays and Sundays, but then the area belongs to the cottage owners. Two rods are always sold together in one package. If people do not buy the whole area, they must meet outside the ION hotel at 07:45 and draw on which side they start fishing. If people do not show up at 07:50, those first to have arrived are allowed to choose where to start, but then anglers change at noon. A fishing book is in the basement of the ION hotel and people are obliged to register all catch at the end of the day. You can also send catch numbers to [email protected] If fishermen land tagged fish in Ölfusvatnsárós, they are kindly asked to put them in a box located in the river by the estuary. Also, if hunters get unusually large or weird fish then it is a good idea to put them in a box. Please call Jóhannes’ phone number that is on the box.

Directions

These are two 2-rod fishing areas, Þorsteinsvík and Ölfusvatnsós. The day is divided into two parts and people fish for half a day in each area.

Þorsteinsvík: Take a trail to the farm Nesjar and drive along the driveway. When there is about 300-400 meters to the farm, turn right on the only trail that lies to the right. That trail runs straight down to Þorsteinsvík. Anglers can park their cars on the sandy beach. The bay is divided into two, on weekdays all the bay follows the ION fishing area, but on weekends its southern part is not included. It is on the side that is driven to Þorsteinsvík, sand dunes in the middle of the bay separate the fishing areas.

Ölfusvatnsós: When driving to Ölfusvatnsós, take Grafningsvegur (road 360), to Ljósafossvirkjun. From there, turn off the road by Ölfuvatnsá and park the car in a small parking at the end of the trail. From there people walk down to Ölfusvatnsós. The fishing area extends from the fence just north of the estuary to the fence by river Villingavatnsá. The brown trout can lie close to shore in bad weather.
