Vatnsdalsvatn is 2.2 km² in area. It is very deep on the west side but shallower on the east. The lake is about 8 m above sea level and its maximum depth is about 30 m. The lake holds mainly char, with sea-run char and occasional salmon also caught every year. Most of the fish caught weigh 1–3-pounds. Every summer, a considerable number of char are caught weighing up to 6 – 7 pounds. The best fishing spots are in the estuary and the outflow of the lake. There are also fishing spots on Viteyri, which is in the middle of the lake on the west side, and Kofanes, which is foremost in the lake. It is about 30 minutes’ walk to Lambagilseyri east of the lake. There are numerous fishing spots along the coastline on this hiking trail. It is not allowed to fish in the rivers, which are connected to the water. The boundaries of the lake and the river are specially marked.
