Tungufljót in Skaftártungu

River Tungufljót is in West-Skaftafellssýsla. Its source is on Skaftártunguafrétti and many streams join it on the way to the confluence with Kúðafljót. The environment is spectacular; lava, sand and in most places the river flows through a narrow channel with green banks. There are many good fishing spots in Tungufljót. The main fish species is good-sized sea trout with fish over 20 pounds regularly caught. Salmon, char, and resident brown trout are also caught here. In the lower part of the river, from Bjarnarfoss and downstream, there are very good resident char and brown trout. Non-spawning sea trout can be found at the confluence all summer long. Salmon start to migrate upstream in July. Above Bjarnarfoss a very beautiful area is to be found, that might come as a surprise. There are resident brown trout that are fun to fish for in the magnificent surroundings.
