The Arctic char population is in a concerning state, as indicated by the recent logging records, especially in the northern char rivers. The charr are retreating, but the number of sea trout is increasing in some rivers and being caught instead.
There are few things more enjoyable than catching char using a small tackle and enticing them with different flies. Hasn’t the time come to close certain areas in rivers and release all the sea-running char in others?
Here is the 2024 data captured from some of the best-known Arctic char rivers:
River Bjarnarfjarðará: 67
River Hjaltadalsá/Kolka: 172
River Fjarðará (Ólafsfirði): 402
River Svarfaðardalsá: 169
