Those who are traveling to Iceland and are interested in fishing for sea running Arctic char have quite few options to choose from. However, conditions and fishing opportunities vary between fishing areas and unfortunately sea running char has been declining in many places in Iceland. Below is a regional classification of the rivers and areas which Veiðiheimar considers to be the best options:
West Iceland: Lýsa lake area, Hraunsfjörður and the upper Haukadalsá
Westfjords: the rivers Gufudalsá, Vatnsdalsá, Bjarnarfjarðará and Ósá. Also lake Vatnsdalsvatn
Northwest Iceland: the Arctic char and trout beats of the rivers Miðfjarðará, Víðidalsá and Vatnsdalsá. River Hjaltadalsá & Kolka, the upper river Flókadalsá and the river Hrolleifsdalsá. Also, the lake Hóp.
Northeast Iceland: the rivers Eyjafjarðará, Hörgá, Svarfaðardalsá, Fjarðará, Brunná and Lónsá.
East Iceland: the rivers Norðfjarðará, Selfljót, Fjarðará in Seyðisfjörður and Breiðdalsá. Also, Fögruhlíðarós.
