What can be fished

The popularity of the fishing area in Eldvatnsbotnar has increased a lot in recent years, as it is possible to get good fishing there in beautiful surroundings. Eldvatnsbotnar encompasses the upper part of Eldvatn in Meðalland in Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla. The river originates in the so-called Rafstöðvarlón, which is south of the farm at Botnar. It flows in two tributaries from the lake and both tributaries are fished, especially the western one. Anglers also have access to fishing in lake Fljótsbotn, which includes char and sea trout. Sea trout arrive earlier in Eldvatnsbotnar than to other sea trout areas in South Iceland and the best time there is from around 10-14th of August and into August.

Accommodation & Facilities

Fishing cabin

The house is well equipped with furniture and utensils. It has three rooms, two with two beds and the third with one bed. Duvets for five people are in the house. The house has both electric and gas cooking – there is a microwave and a hob in the kitchen. Anglers may arrive at the house one hour after the end of the fishing time and must vacate it at the same time on the day of departure. Anglers must provide all the bedding and toiletries and are kindly asked to clean the house thoroughly upon departure and take all rubbish with them. There is no oven in the house but there is a hob and all the main tableware. The house is open, and guests are asked to leave it open upon departure. Keys can be found in the house if people want to lock it, while they are fishing. There is a gas grill by the house and if gas runs out, it is a short way to the town of Botnar to get another gas cylinder.

Fishing rules

Two rods are sold for two days at a time, except in June and July when whole weeks are sold from Friday to Friday.

Drive along highway no. 1 about 50 km east of Vík in Mýrdal. There, turn right on a trail to the farm of Botnar. The trail is about 6.5 km long and goes through the barn of the farm, turns right, and continues for about 2 kilometers to the fishing cabin.

Fishing area: Includes the power station reservoir and both tributaries of Eldvatnsbotnar to a marked fishing boundary. Before July 27th, fishing is only allowed in Rafstöðvarlóni and Fljótsbotni.
