What can be fished

Description

Fossálar is a water-rich river that originates south of Miklafell on Austur-Síðuafréttir, at about 600 meters above sea level, and flows to Skaftá east of Síðunni. Sea trout are the main catch in Fossálar, but char are sometimes caught in the early summer. Autumn fishing for sea trout is, however, the hallmark of Fossálar. There are many fine fishing spots with some deep pools in beautiful surroundings. It is worth paying some attention to the Syðri-Ál area, as there is often good fishing there, although it leaves little to be desired. The fishing is for char in the first half of the summer and sea trout in high summer.

Accommodation & Facilities

Fishing cabin

There is a very good fishing cabin by the river and the facilities are as good as it gets. The house has electricity and has two triple rooms. It is located on the edge of the lava field at Syðri-Ál in an extremely beautiful environment and the natural beauty of the area is unique. People may arrive at the fishing lodge one hour before the fishing begins and must vacate the house before 2 pm on the day of departure. They must clean the house before leaving and remove rubbish. Anglers provide duvets, bedding, rags, and clothes themselves.

Fishing rules

In the spring, all fish must be released but 2 fish per rod can be taken in the summer and autumn fishing. Only flies are allowed in the spring fishing, but flies and spinners in the summer and autumn fishing. Fishing is done two days at a time in spring and autumn fishing, but 4 days at a time in the summer fishing (from June 20th – August 7th).

Directions

Take Highway 1, which crosses the bridge over Fossálar and take the first road to the right of Highway 1 through a marked gate. Follow the road, which is well marked until the house is reached. The fishing area extends from the border opposite Orrustuhóll to the mark at Brunasandur where the Vatnamót fishing area takes over. Syðri-Áll follows this area and its sources are at the lava edge, by the fishing lodge and merge(s) with Fossálar on Brunasandur.
