What can be fished

Description

Hítará is one of the most popular salmon rivers in Iceland, as the fishing there is often exceptionally good. Also the Fishing Lodge of Jóhannes from Borg, has played a part in its popularity. From the lodge it is often possible to watch anglers struggle with salmon at the fishing spots Breiðin & Kverk, which are in front of the house. There are many good and variable fishing spots in Hítará and access to them is good. The river is ideal for fly fishing, especially by hitching. The fish are normally not big, but there are some bigger ones in between the smaller ones.

Accommodation & Facilities

Angling lodge

The fishing lodge at Hítará is the ancient house of Lundur.  There is no food offered the first part of the season, until June 30th and nor after August 25th. There are made up beds and the lodge is cleaned after people leave. Anglers are kindly asked to be tidy and take good care of the house. They can come to the house one hour before the fishing time and must leave one hour after the fishing time ends. Two people are allowed to stay in the lodge for each license sold.

Fishing rules

Four rods are used in the period from June 18th to noon on July 8th, six rods from July 8th to noon on September 6th, but then four rods are used again to the end of the season.

2 salmon per rod per shift may be taken.  All salmon over 70 cm must be released.

Directions

Drive through Borgarnes and turn left onto road nr. 54 at the roundabout. From Borgarnes to the lodge Lundur is about 26 km and it stands on the left hand at the riverbank.

The fishing area reaches from the estuary to the border by the fishing spot Úrhylur where Grjótá flows into Hítará
