What can be fished

Description

Híðarvatn in Selvogur has for years been one of the most productive Arctic char lakes in the country. Its maximum depth is about 5 meters, and its size is just over 3.3 km². Its drainage is through Vogsós, but the lake comes up from the lava through countless springs. Hlíðarvatn is a very exciting fishing lake and thousands of char are caught there every summer. This is a fish that is considered very delicious and fun to eat. Most of the fish are 0.5-1 pounds, but every summer a few 5-pound fish and even bigger ones are caught. In addition to sea char, occasional salmon have been caught in the lake.

Ármenn is one of the companies that leases fishing rights in Hlíðarvatn. The company was founded on 28 February 1973 and rents out 3 rods in the lake together with a fishing house/cabin, Hlíðarseli.

Accommodation & Facilities

Fishing cabin

It’s located under the hill to the west, up from Botnavík. There is a bathroom, two rooms with 2 bunk beds each, a loft, a kitchen counter with a gas hob, tableware and utensils, an entrance hall and a good outdoor gas grill. Bed linen or sleeping bags, tablecloths and tea towels must be brought. The keys to the house are stored on a hook by the front door. Anglers sign for their presence by the lake in the logbook of the fishing cabin and record all catches in the logbook that is kept there.

Fishing rules

The house must be returned clean for the next anglers no later than 18.00 and all rubbish removed. Please note that loose dogs by the lake are strictly forbidden and if dogs are kept in the house, they may only stay in the hall space. Only fishing from the bank is permitted – fishing from a boat is not allowed. However, a belly boat can be used, except in bays, such as in Botnavík. Those anglers must, however, give way to those fishing on land and stay 50 meters from the nearest angler.

Directions

All the lake down to the bridge on Suðurstrandarvegur, without the islets by Stakkavík which are protected during the nesting season for birds
