Description
Lake Hólmavatn on Hólmavatnsheiði, is together with Lake Laxárdalsvatn, named Sólheimavötn after a nearby farm to which they belong. Hólmavatn is about 1 km² in size and at about 190 m above sea level. There is good fishing in the lake. Both brown trout and Arctic char can be found there, although the char stocks are declining. A common size of fish is 1-2 pounds.

It is possible to camp by the lake free of charge at your own risk and in consultation with the landowner, as there are no sanitary facilities.
Fishing rules
Anglers must register on arrival at the farm Sólheimar before going fishing, but the fishing card and ID must be shown. Anglers also receive a fishing report form, which must be completed at the end of the fishing. All traffic on motorcycles and ATVs is prohibited except in consultation with the fishing guard. Children under the age of 14 fish for free with a cardholder. Dogs are not allowed in the area.
Directions
Drive along Bröttabrekka towards Búðardalur, if you come from the south. Just before reaching Laxá in Dölum, turn on road 59 up Laxárdalur and drive about 25 km to the farm Sólheimar to register. From there, follow a 5 km road up to the heath. This road is not accessible for family cars, but you can drive there in well-equipped and high ground clearance four-wheel drive cars. You can fish in the whole lake for the land of Sólheimar; or from the outflow east of the lake and north to the point where Lake Reiðgötuvatn lies next to the lake.
