Trout areas where salmon can also be found

Iceland has several fishing areas that are known for char or trout fishing, but salmon can also be caught there. These areas are usually located downstream in a water system or river, and salmon pass through them to reach their spawning grounds. The number of salmon caught in these areas varies from a few to several dozen, and up to around 100.

In some cases, fishing permits for these specific areas have been raised. This may seem reasonable given that the salmon catch is typically a few dozen fish, often on only two rods. However, there are situations where the price does not align with this fishing opportunity. Some anglers believe that salmon should be a complimentary addition to trout fishing, without any additional cost. It should be considered normal, because they are purchasing permits for brown trout or char fishing, not salmon fishing.

Below are some popular brown trout and char areas, where salmon is also caught in varying quantities:

Norðurá – Flóðatangi

Miðfjarðará – char beat

Víðidalsá – char beat

Laxá – Árbót
