Ice Fishing Opportunities

Some passionate anglers struggle to wait for spring and summer when the rivers open. Many of them spend their time tying flies, while others enjoy reading fishing magazines or books. In Iceland, anglers have an exciting option to pass the time until summer: ice fishing!

Iceland has numerous lakes where ice fishing is possible. While some are located in the south and west, the majority are in the north. There are few specialized tourism companies that provide ice fishing trips.

Ice fishing is permitted on the following lakes located in the south and west of Iceland. It is important to ensure that the conditions are optimal before engaging in this activity:

Fellsendavatn, Eastern-Gíslholtsvatn, Vífílsstaðavatn, Hafravatn, Leirvogsvatn, Meðalfellsvatn, Arnarvatnsheiði (need guidance), and Hlíðarvatn in Hnappadalur

In North Iceland, ice fishing is possible on the following lakes:

Vesturhópsvatn, Hnausatjörn, Selvatn (front one), Hrísatjörn, Ljósavatn, Vestmannsvatn, Kringluvatn, Langavatn in Reykjahverfi and Krókavatn at Fellsheiði (need guidance)

In Akureyri, two tour operators, The Traveling Viking and Icelandic Adventures, offer ice fishing trips with all services included:
